OpenURLs uniquely identify a document on the Internet. An OpenURL contains information such as the title of the document, it's creator or author, or a unique number, such as an ISSN, that identifies what's being looked for. Clicking on a link to an OpenURL takes the request to a link Resolver server that translates the request into a location. The document at that location is then sent back to the user.

Some link Resolver servers also offer the user links to additional information. Information such as information about the creator of the item, reviews of the item, or linking to other items that are similar to the item asked for.
