We encourage you to:
  • Set clear objectives.
What is the purpose of the library assignment? What results do you expect?
  • Relate a library assignment to actual course content.
Information found is more meaningful to students if it is related to the topics covered in the course.
  • Check the LBCC online catalog.
Find out if we have the resources you are recommending to your students. We are happy to consider any materials you may need for your class.
  • Consider putting materials on reserve.
This ensures access for large numbers of students.
  • Be realistic about students' research abilities.
Do they know how to search the library catalog? Do they understand how to search EBSCOhost?
  • Focus a topic.
Provide time in class for discussions on focusing a topic and generating research questions.
  • Teach research strategies.
Teach students to gather background information using encyclopedias or find periodical articles using online databases like EBSCOhost.
  • Get a head start.
Encourage students to visit the library early in their research and to ask for help at the reference desk
  • Provide librarians with copies of your assignment.
This enables us to be better prepared to assist your students.
