Search Process (Strategy 2 continued)

Step 5: Review the Scope, Related and Used For sections and decide if this is the Subject Heading to use.

Step 6: It is suggested that you "explode" patient compliance. The plus sign "+" informs you that there are more specific and related terms to the subject heading. When a subject heading is "exploded," you search the general term, in this case "Patient Compliance," and the more specific terms listed under it. On the left side of the screen under Tree Views, you see the term "Patient Compliance" with a small plus sign after it. Indented and below it are more specific, but related, terms. To explode "Patient Compliance," place a check in the box before "Explode." Click on 'Add' to put the exploded Subject Heading in the Search box.

Step 7: After you have addressed one of the main concepts of your search (Patient Compliance), you can use CINAHL Headings to identify the second concept - the relationship between patients and health care professionals. Enter "Patient relations" or "Professional relations" in the Browse for box and perform the search.

Step 8:Both of these search terms map to the subject heading "Professional-Patient Relations". Click directly on this subject heading.
