• Determine if the subject heading has subheadings that are appropriate to focus the search on the desired aspects
• Pull up the complete citation for a record

You have a paper due for class. You are looking for articles about the complications of using TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition). You don't have the time to sit in the library going through journals to find this information.

Step 1: Take your information need and create a search statement about it.

"I am looking for journal articles about complications of using TPN."

Step 2: Identify the important concepts in your search.

"TPN or Total Parenteral Nutrition."

Step 3: You can search CINAHL Headings to determine if there is a subject heading for TPN or Total Parenteral Nutrition.

Step 4: Go to the Advanced Search screen and select CINAHL Headings.

Step 5: Then, type "TPN" or "Total Parenteral Nutrition" in the Browse for box. Searching either by "TPN" or "Total Parenteral Nutrition" brings you to the same list of subject headings.
