Finding Census Information in your County

1. The first site to visit for census information for your state, county, or city is American Factfinder - http://factfinder.census.gov

2. Once you are on the main page of the site, do a search in the "Fast Access" window.

3. The next page that comes up will provide information from the most recent census from your designated area. Scroll down to the section on "Economic Characteristics."

4. Clicking on the "map" link will bring up a map of the region that shows you the areas of greatest density for residents living below poverty level.

Searching for newspaper articles

In searching for information concerning poverty in your city or county, start with searching through the Oregonian and Statesman Journal databases provided by the LBCC Library. The Library suggests that you use "poverty and [your region]" as the search terms. Keep in mind that neither newspaper may mention your county or city specifically. You will also want to search the websites of your local newspaper to see if they have published any recent articles on poverty. Google provides an easy way to just search that particular newspaper. In its search window, write your search terms, then add the words "site:[newspaper address]". For example, if you were to search Google only for those articles which have appeared in Albany's Democrat Herald newspaper, the search would like this example.
